Round 3: Dan Mullen vs Kevin Summlin; New Strengths for Dawgs and Aggies to Prepare for

There is no doubt that there’s a challenge lying in wait for #15 MSU on Saturday morning. There are questions about a lingering hangover from the loss to #1 Bama, there’s the issue of how to contain A&M QB Johnny Manziel, and most importantly, there are dreams and nightmares related to how State’s season could end. At 7-1 and 3-1 in SEC play, Dan Mullen’s Bulldogs have 4 games remaining, all vs tough SEC West foes. The one opponent that is somewhat unfamiliar for the Dawgs, with exception of the 2000 Independence Bowl (“Snow Bowl”), is Texas A&M. The 2 schools will renew their meetings on an annual basis this weekend.

If you are looking for more recent ties between the 2 schools, you can actually turn to MSU’s 2 games vs the University of Houston, both during the young 4-year Mullen era. The connection of course, lies in the fact that those Cougar teams were coached by Kevin Summlin, who is now the new head coach in College Station. But, a lot has changed since the 2009 and 2010 seasons. Just how much has changed? Quite a lot actually, mainly at the QB positions for both teams. With that said, let’s take a look at what State and A&M will see from each other in Saturday’s matchup, that’s different from the past.

MSU Gives Summlin a Different Look
In 2009, State lost 31-24 to UH, by way of a lack of a passing dimension on Offense, some terrible officiating, and the inability of our Defense to stop Cougar QB Case Keenum. Keenum threw for 434 yds and 4 TDs, while MSU was limited by the play of QB Tyson Lee, State rushed for 330 yards. Had the Dawgs had any more Offensive production on the day, it’s a possibility State would have put the game away due to holding UH way below their season averages on Offense. In 2010, the same year that MSU rolled to a 9 win season, the Dawgs rode Chris Relf into Houston and torched the Cougars for 538 total yards (409 of that-rushing). State won 47-24. When you look at the 2012 Bulldogs, QB Tyler Russell will give Kevin Summlin’s staff a completely different look from previous years, while giving his own team balance on the Offensive side of the ball. Russell has already surpassed Relf and Lee’s season high totals from their careers, in just his first 8 games of 2012. Not to mention he leads an Offense that posts 160 yds of rushing on average. This MSU Offense will be a much different team than the ones Summlin has prepared for in the past.

Summlin Gives MSU a Different Look on Both Sides of the Ball
When A&M entered the SEC and hired Kevin Summlin as its head coach, my first thoughts were- (1) Awesome Offense (2) NO Defense. I was wrong on the latter prediction, and have to agree with Mullen that the Aggie D is extremely underrated. Even though their Defense is ranked 55th overall, A&M does an excellent job of stopping the run, which is about what every team in the SEC uses to open up their passing game, including MSU. If MSU comes out and establishes the pass early, that might reverse A&M’s focus, and open up the run for State. Though their D doesn’t force that many turnovers, the Aggies do an excellent job of getting to the QB (3rd in Sacks nationally), and racking up tackles for loss (32nd nationally). I say all of that to say that MSU and Mullen will face a better Defense then they did during Summlin’s UH years. Now, as for the QB position for A&M, Summlin hasn’t lost a single ounce of his offensive output that his Cougar teams were famous for. In fact, having a QB who is as much of a threat to throw as he is to run, has opposing Defenses continually guessing what’s in store on every snap. Manziel doesn’t stick to the pocket like Keenum used to, but still averages 277 ypg passing to go with his 99 ypg rushing (leads the SEC).

Final Thoughts
Everyone’s stats take a blow when you play a team like Alabama, and A&M’s probably will next week. So, when comparing these 2 teams offensively, like we will tomorrow, you can’t forget the numbers that State posted before their trip to Tuscaloosa, that resulted in the Dawgs being held way below their season averages. State is more than capable of putting up some numbers on the Aggie D, especially since their pass Defense is pretty weak. On D, Chris Wilson and the Dawgs will have to monitor their aggressiveness in containing Manziel, but at the same time provide enough pressure to force him into mistakes. A lot for both teams to prepare for, even though both coaching staffs are quite familiar with each other.

Your thoughts?

This game makes me more nervous than the Bama game, just for the simple reason that I could be ok losing to a much better Alabama team. We should beat aTm, we are the better team but I’m worried that this weekend, Alabama may get its second win against us. I haven’t heard/seen much from our players. I have heard them say that it’s back to business as usual but from what I have seen, their body language says otherwise. This aTm team is fast and physical and if we don’t come out fired up and fully focused, then we could potentially get run out early.

Manziel is a pure beast, and I don’t expect anything less than beast mode from him this weekend. I expect to see a lot of Matt Wells out there spying and keeping him in check. I agree about aTm’s defense, very tough and hard nosed group. They love to get after the QB. I hope we get to see more Griffin in this game, just like I had hoped to see him in our goal line package against Bama (but didn’t). I think Tyler Russell and our WRs could have a big big day against this group. They seem to be firing on all cylinders right now.

We desperately need this win, to prove to ourselves that we belong where we are. I believe in this team, this season is too special to let one loss ruin it. Gotta battle back this week and use our emotion as fuel. On a side note, I love me some Dan Mullen but the guy MUST hire a special teams coach. Our special teams is KILLING us and has all year. We need someone that can dedicate their entire focus to special teams. Remember playing the NCAA Football game that featured the “momentum” bar? Well just like in the game, big plays on special teams such as a 100 kick returned for TD or 60 yard return to start the game in the other team’s territory or blocked/missed kicks always swing momentum the way of the other team. I am a STRONG believer in momentum and we do as good of a job as anyone at giving it away. Sorry, I would just really like to see this team play good football in all aspects of the game for 60 minutes.

I definitely want to see us play a complete game too Hail, and hopefully that will be this weekend.

I was about to mention the same thing in my article tomorrow, about how State’s players have been extremely quiet. To me, it’s not that they are in hiding or anything, but rather staying focused. All their questions are about Johnny M and they are probably doing their best to not buy into the hype of having to play him, so that when they step on the field the field with him-he doesn’t get more respect than he deserves. Sometimes players can become in awe of a another player and you lose focus in facing him. That would explain their silence this week, not to mention they are probably tired of answering questions about him. Like John Banks said, “we just gon’ run our defense.”

I’m hoping they are also being quiet, due to not let too much out of the bag about how they plan to defend Johnny M. You know the plan is place, and Broomfield made one quick mention about how they might install the D that they used vs Denard Robinson in the Gator Bowl.

Griff hasn’t got a lot of carries earlier, but has ran the ball well when he has. Would like to see him be a valuable 2-3rd back. My boy J-Rob has been quiet since the UT game.

On top of hiring a special teams coach, I think we need a new DL coach as well. I know Chris Wilson runs the DL and doubles as the Def. Coord, but to me, if our DL was playing anything like the expectations we had for them, not to mention their rankings as recruits, we’d be hard to match even in the SEC. I think Wilson doesn’t get the time he needs with them.

I like the fact that our guys are staying out of the media. It doesnt allow someone to runoff a the mouth and give them board material. If our guys are focused, good, maybe we will come out take care of business, and handle it like we should have last week!!!!!

My worry is that the loss against Bama took the personality out of our team. We don’t have a bunch of show boating, run-off at the mouth type of guys. Our players are always respectful to other teams, and mostly just say that we are going to do what we do best. I hope that our players aren’t so down and out that they are just emotionless now. I think that emotion they felt sitting in that locker room in Tuscaloosa should remain in the back of their minds all year, reminding each of them how it felt and how they don’t ever want to experience that again. I honestly never worry about our players giving another team “board material,” our guys usually build other teams up and give them credit for their successes. I think the stage just got to our players last week and when you’re on the road against one of the best college football teams ever, a few mistakes will take a domino effect and ultimately kill you. It is imperative that we come out and respond with fight, grit, and emotion this week. We have to get a win. As they say, the quickest way to get over a loss is to get a win. A win over a quality ranked opponent would be just what they need to prove to themselves that they are still a team to be reckoned with and that our season can still result in a BCS game. I’m telling you boys, a win this Saturday can put us into a great position for the rest of the month, but it all starts this Saturday. We can still do this. Dan may not tell us this pre-game on Saturday, but we have to get loud and be that support system for our boys this weekend.

I think Dan will grab the mic…check 1-2, check 1-2. He knows how to get us fired up.

Hey guys, one thing to feel good about from the Bama loss…no one besides tsun fans is talking about us being overrated. In fact, it’s what Bama did against us that has the national media impressed and saying Bama could beat pro teams. But, no let down from the media about State losing to Bama. I like that.

Now we just have to bounce back…and we should.
